Surgery day

Today Linnea is having her left rear leg amputated. It is hard to comprehend that what we thought was a cracked foot pad or strained muscle could end being something so devastating. Since the x-rays showed no sign of the osteosarcoma metastasizing in her chest or other leg, we opted for the amputation in the hopes of extending her life and giving her some pain relief. Although this clearly seemed to be the right treatment choice based on our vet’s recommendations and loads of internet research, it was still heartwrenching to drop Linnea off this morning knowing what she will have to endure.

Welcome to the blogs. Our doggy Mia just went through the same. Mia’s mommy and I wish your family and Linnea the best. Stay strong. these first few weeks are the worst.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. It is nice to know Linnea (and her family) are not alone.

Lots of pain relief – not just some! The first two weeks won’t be easy, as I’m sure you’ve read already, but what comes after if all goes well is sooooo worth it. My Yoda (who I had before Gerry) was a front leg amputee with osteosarcoma. He only had about four months post amputation, but they were HIGH quality. He played ball, he played chase with other dogs at the park, and he still caught a rabbit in the yard, despite my attempts to interefere – the works! Results vary, of course, but there are so many great examples of tripawds (with cancer and chemo even) that you have every reason to be hopeful!

Get as much sleep as you can – you’re gonna need it!

I can’t wait for Linnea to be back chasing her tennis ball or the unsuspecting squirrel. Thanks for your rays of hope!
