Waning Days

Last week, Linnea was still up and enjoying the fresh fall air, though no longer running or chasing tennis balls or squirrels.  But the decline has come quickly. A few days ago, she stopped eating except when hand fed in the evenings.  I have to squirt water into her mouth and them sometimes she will perk up enough to drink out her bowl if I hold it to her mouth. And today has been the worst – she can no longer stand on her own. We have to carry her outside.  This is the end.  We won’t let her suffer more.  Linnea will be crossing the rainbow bridge all too soon.

The news we didn’t want to hear

Linnea hadn’t been acting like her usual happy self, and although I hoped it was just caused by a stubborn eye infection, I was worried enough to have x-rays done. The  news was achingly bad – Linnea has three tumors in her lungs and one on a rib.  There is not much to do at this point other than to give her lots of love and provide pain relief when it gets too hard on her. I am so grateful she had 7-8 good months after her amputation to run and play and swim. But none of us are ready to let this golden girl go.

Having a little snooze…

Linnea needs some rest after playing in yard all afternoon.  Our 7 year old took this photo. She has been very active, but I think she is falling more frequently than she used to. Is it because she forgets she has only 3 legs, or is there something else going on? She seems happy as can be and is not deterred when she momentarily collapses. Linnea is delighted to chase after a tennis ball for as long as someone is willing to throw. Another strange symptom – she is starting to lose some of her newly grown fur. We will be visiting the vet because some of the new fur that came in on her shaved areas is now falling out. Linnea has a few bare patches. I wonder if it is an infection.  All in all – this is a happy dog. No complaints on her part. It is just her pawrents wondering if all is well…

Off and running

Here’s Linnea – ready to play some tripawd ball. She is not going to let one less leg stop her!

The staple-removal went well (at least the vet techs said she didn’t seem too uncomfortable), and her incision has healed cleanly. She is even growing a little hair back. But as a result of her preference for lying on her two-legged side , Linnea has developed a good-sized sore on her front elbow. We are supposed to make sure she has a well-padded place to rest. But of course this girl prefers the cool tiles or the hardwood floors.

Look at her run!!

Off my pain meds

Linnea has finished with her pain meds and her incision is healing nicely. We’ve been able to let her go without the lovely, blue cone because she has had no interest in her incision. Well…until today. She suddenly noticed it was there. Wondering if it is the lack of pain meds. Her staples come out in a couple of days, which will be another step. But how DO they take those staples out?!

Playing outside again

From Linnea: I still can’t get anyone to throw this ball for me (they say I need to take it easy), but it is sure nice to be outside.

I’m a believer

Before Linnea’s amputation I heard often about how much better she would feel without her painful leg. While I truly wanted to believe this, I still harbored some doubts. Well, my doubts have dispersed in the undeniable evidence before my eyes – my dog is feeling great! Linnea comes over to greet me once again when I walk through the front door, turning her happy doggy face up towards me. She again makes frequent forays to her food bowl to see if anything new has appeared. And she eagerly sniffs the grass in the yard to determine what kind of interesting animal visitors have passed by. It is wonderful to see Linnea happy again, and at just one week post-surgery.

First day home

This is Linnea on her first day home. She has her lovely blue cone and a t-shirt covering her incision. The t-shirt lasted less than one minute, and after she successfully removed the second t-shirt, I gave up. We are getting more accustomed to seeing her incision and shaved hind end, but it is still unsettling at times. Linnea is getting around like a champ. She tried the stairs yesterday and did quite well, though going up was definitely harder than going down. Our next big decision will be whether or not to do chemo. We’ll be scouring the Tripawd message boards to learn from others who have been down this road.

Pre-amp Linnea

Except for swimming, Linnea likes nothing better than chasing a tennis ball. This photo was taken a few days before her amputation, when she wasn’t allowed to run around anymore. But she was still hopeful someone would give the ball a toss. We are looking forward to more ball-playing days after her recovery.

Day after surgery

We heard from the vet’s office that Linnea is recovering well and did a little walking around already. We hope to bring her home later today. I can’t wait to see her but am bracing myself for the sight of her amputation. In a way, I would like to fast forward a few weeks and be through this difficult stage. I read the other Tripawd blogs for hope and inspiration.
